Department Overview

The METU Physics Education Program offers an integrated academic structure that combines a strong foundation in physics with contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. The program prepares students not only to understand the fundamental laws of nature, but also to communicate scientific knowledge effectively in educational contexts. Students take physics courses from the Department of Physics and pedagogy-focused courses from the Faculty of Education, developing both analytical competence and instructional expertise. Through this dual structure, the program supports the development of individuals who can simplify complex concepts, foster curiosity, and promote critical thinking. By graduation, students gain both scientific depth and pedagogical competence, enabling them to contribute to science education in diverse academic and professional environments.

Real Experience

The METU Physics Education Program offers a learning experience where scientific knowledge and teaching practice develop together. Students progress through a demanding yet rewarding process in which they not only learn physics, but also learn how to communicate it effectively.

Over time, physics becomes not only a subject of study but also a subject of communication. Students begin to focus not only on understanding concepts, but also on how to make them accessible and meaningful to others.

Teaching practice plays a central role in this transformation. During practicum experiences, students observe how theoretical knowledge translates into real classroom learning, gaining insight into student engagement and learning processes.

Laboratory experiences further reinforce this connection, demonstrating how abstract concepts can be made tangible and impactful. These moments highlight the role of teaching as an active process of meaning-making.

English-medium instruction supports engagement with global academic resources and strengthens communication skills in international contexts.

Beyond coursework, campus life contributes significantly to student development. Participation in student communities, projects, and collaborative environments enhances communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

By graduation, students are prepared not only to teach physics, but also to communicate scientific knowledge effectively, inspire curiosity, and contribute to science education in a wide range of contexts.
