Department Overview

The METU Department of Mining Engineering provides a comprehensive education focused on the exploration, extraction, and management of natural resources within complex and large-scale systems. Established in 1960, the program equips students with the ability to operate under uncertainty, make strategic decisions, and manage the full resource value chain from underground operations to global markets. The curriculum combines strong engineering fundamentals with digital mining competencies and a sustainability-oriented perspective. Throughout their studies, students develop analytical, technical, and operational skills required to address real-world challenges in resource-driven industries. By graduation, they are prepared as globally competitive engineers capable of contributing to both traditional and emerging sectors, including sustainable energy and advanced material technologies.

Real Experience

The METU Mining Engineering program offers a practice-oriented learning experience that integrates engineering knowledge with real-world application and decision-making.

In the first year, students build a strong interdisciplinary foundation alongside other engineering programs. In the following years, the curriculum becomes increasingly applied, with laboratory work and internships supporting the transition from theory to practice.

In the final year, students undertake comprehensive design projects such as Mine Design and Mineral Processing Design. These team-based projects simulate real engineering challenges, requiring technical analysis, planning, and collaborative problem-solving.

Throughout the program, students benefit from a strong culture of mentorship and collaboration. The department’s established alumni network and open academic environment support both academic development and career progression.

As students advance, they develop key professional competencies, including teamwork, leadership, time management, and effective communication in technical contexts.

By graduation, students are equipped not only with engineering knowledge, but also with the confidence and professional mindset required to manage complex operations and contribute to the global resource industry.
