Department Overview
The METU Department of History offers a comprehensive and research-oriented education that goes beyond the memorization of historical facts, focusing instead on critical analysis, interpretation, and the production of historical knowledge. The program covers a broad chronological scope from antiquity to the present and integrates diverse fields such as economic, environmental, gender, religious, and cultural history, alongside contemporary approaches including digital humanities. With English as the medium of instruction, students engage with global historiographical debates while also developing advanced language skills, including Ottoman Turkish and other foreign languages, enabling access to both local archival sources and international scholarship. By graduation, students acquire strong analytical thinking, methodological rigor, and multilingual competence, preparing them for advanced research and interdisciplinary academic work.
