Department Overview
The METU Environmental Engineering Program educates engineers who are capable of analyzing complex environmental systems and developing sustainable, science-based solutions to global environmental challenges. Grounded in strong engineering fundamentals, the program integrates analytical thinking, systems approaches, and research-oriented education to address critical issues such as water and wastewater management, air quality, solid waste systems, energy efficiency, and climate change adaptation. Students are trained to understand the interaction between environmental processes, technology, and society, and to design solutions that are both technically sound and environmentally sustainable. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and applied learning, graduates develop the ability to evaluate, model, and improve environmental systems at multiple scales. By graduation, they become engineers equipped with the technical expertise, environmental awareness, and problem-solving skills required to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development in both national and global contexts.

Real Experience
Studying Environmental Engineering at METU involves developing a multidisciplinary perspective where engineering principles are applied to real environmental systems.
Students learn to approach environmental problems analytically, focusing on measurement, modeling, and system-based solutions rather than memorization.
Throughout the program, core courses progressively build both technical competence and confidence in solving complex engineering problems.
Laboratory courses and applied projects play a central role, allowing students to directly observe how theoretical concepts translate into real environmental processes and systems.
Faculty members maintain close academic engagement with students, fostering a supportive yet rigorous learning environment.
Students are exposed to the interconnected nature of environmental engineering, exploring its links with energy systems, industrial processes, urban infrastructure, and climate science.
Sustainability is approached not as an abstract concept but as a measurable and engineering-driven field of practice involving data, calculation, and system optimization.
Early involvement in research and industry-oriented projects enables students to engage with real-world environmental challenges during their undergraduate studies.
By graduation, students are prepared to contribute to environmental problem-solving at both local and global levels, and to continue developing professionally in a rapidly evolving field.
