Department Overview
The METU Foreign Language Education (FLE) Program prepares future educators who can critically engage with language, pedagogy, and communication through an interdisciplinary academic framework. Since 1982, the program has combined language teaching, linguistics, literature, and educational sciences to develop educators who are not only proficient in teaching English but also capable of analyzing how language is learned, processed, and used in diverse contexts. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, theoretical awareness, and reflective teaching practice, enabling students to connect educational theory with classroom application. Through a strong academic tradition and English-medium instruction, students gain access to global perspectives in language education and applied linguistics. By graduation, they become reflective, adaptable, and research-informed professionals capable of working across educational and professional contexts in both national and international settings.

Real Experience
Studying FLE at METU involves developing both linguistic competence and critical academic awareness through an interdisciplinary learning environment.
Students engage with language not only as a communication tool but as a system shaped by cultural, cognitive, and social factors.
Literature and linguistics courses support deeper analytical thinking, helping students understand how language functions across different contexts and disciplines.
Teaching practice is informed by theoretical frameworks, allowing students to connect pedagogical decisions with academic reasoning.
From early stages, students interact with faculty and, in some cases, graduate-level academic environments, fostering intellectual development and confidence.
The program encourages continuous questioning of teaching methods, learning processes, and educational approaches.
English-medium instruction enables access to international scholarship and active participation in global academic discussions.
By graduation, students are prepared not only as language teachers but as reflective practitioners with strong analytical and academic foundations capable of adapting to diverse professional pathways.
